Common Pediatric Dental Emergencies We Treat
Knocked-Out Tooth A knocked-out permanent tooth is a true dental emergency. Time is critical — the tooth has the best chance of being saved if reinserted within 30 minutes.
What to do immediately:
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), never the root
- If dirty, rinse gently with milk or saline — do NOT scrub
- If your child is old enough, have them hold it in their cheek or in a cup of milk
- Call us immediately and come straight to our office
Chipped or Cracked Tooth Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Bring any tooth fragments with you to the appointment if possible.
Severe Toothache Have your child rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove any food that may be causing pressure. Do not put aspirin directly on the tooth or gum. Call us to schedule an urgent visit.
Lost Filling or Crown Keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side. Call us as soon as possible — a lost crown or filling should be replaced quickly to protect the tooth.
Soft Tissue Injury Cuts to the lips, tongue, or cheeks can bleed heavily. Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth. If bleeding doesn’t stop within 15 minutes, go to the nearest emergency room.
